Cane Creek Centre is a 900-acre regional industrial park that is setting a new standard for “return on investment” the Tobacco Region. When regional participation became a mantra for funding agencies the City of Danville and Pittsylvania County joined forces to start the development of a jointly-owned, fully served, “ready-to-go” site on U.S. Route 58 near the Danville airport. In 2005, Yorktowne Cabinetry announced the creation of 540 jobs in Cane Creek Centre and the first dividends began to accrue. Then in
late-2006
Swedwood, a wholly owned manufacturing
subsidiary of The IKEA Group, announced its first North American facility with a
commitment to create 740 additional jobs over the next decade.
More recently, one of IKEA's
principal European suppliers, Com.40 Ltd., announced a commitment in February 2008 to create more than 800 jobs supplying Swedwood with mattresses
and upholstery. Com.40 will invest $36 million to convert a former tobacco processing facility adjacent to Cane Creek Centre for this production. To date, with several parcels remaining available, the Tobacco Commission’s cumulative commitment of $14.4 million in Cane Creek Centre sites, infrastructure and recruitment incentives (grants from the Southside Economic Development, Special Projects and Tobacco Region Opportunity Fund) has helped attract private investment commitments to date of more than $336 million and create 2,000 new jobs.
